A dog seat belt is not an accessory. It is a piece of safety equipment — for the dog, for the driver, and for every other occupant in the vehicle. These are familiar routes driven routinely — the conditions where attention naturally relaxes. They are also the conditions where a dog is most likely to be active and moving in the cabin, because short journeys don't give dogs time to settle. An excited dog in the back on a 10-minute urban drive is a higher distraction risk than a settled dog on a 2-hour motorway journey — and the urban collision, when it happens, is more likely to throw the dog into a front seat occupant at full force because the dog is upright and moving.

UK Law: What's Required and What It Costs Not to Comply

Highway Code Rule 57 is direct: when travelling in a vehicle, dogs must be "suitably restrained so they cannot distract the driver or injure themselves or others in a sudden stop." The consequences of non-compliance range from inconvenient to serious:

Dog Seat Belts: The Three Types and When to Use Each

The term "dog seat belts" covers three functionally different products. Each is appropriate for a different dog size and travel scenario:

Independent crash certification

The seatbelt adaptor must clip to the metal latch plate — the end that inserts into the buckle — not to the belt webbing itself. Clipping to the webbing allows the adaptor to slide along the belt under load, changing the restraint geometry at the moment it needs to be fixed. What's the difference between a dog seat belt and a dog seat belt harness?
